Natallia Makovik’s project for the preservation of historical heritage
I founded the Academy of Castle Studies in 2021 after spending 14 years in the historic real estate market. I realized this was one of the ways to fulfill my life’s mission.
The Academy of Castle Studies was initially conceived as an educational support project for investors looking to purchase castles, palaces, monasteries, or other historic buildings with rich histories.
Since 2007, I have been working with such buyers, identifying castles and palaces that suit their business plans. Entrepreneurs or enthusiasts who venture into the noble world of historic estates often step into the unknown. There was no institution to prepare them for the responsibilities of owning an ancient property. Therefore, I created manuals for my clients, compiled FAQ lists for new owners of historic monuments, and conducted training sessions on topics such as “Business and Castles,” “Monetizing History,” “Social Media and Noble Marketing,” and more. I provided training, consultations, and guidance, accompanying them on the winding path to success in managing their castles.
I eventually realized that my role had evolved from merely selling chateaux and castles to engaging in educational and consulting activities, which I thoroughly enjoy.
Thus, I decided to establish the Academy of Castle Studies in the Principality of Liechtenstein, extending its operations throughout Europe.
Today, I assist not only future castle owners but also current ones.
During an interview with Lidové noviny on the topic “Castles for Sale: Who Are Their Buyers?”, the editor asked about my life’s dream. She likely expected me to say, “To move into a castle.” Instead, I surprised both her and myself by replying, “To save 1,000 castles.” This revelation felt like a divine calling, illuminating a path prepared for me by a higher power.
Why Rescue Castles and Chateaux?
To me, castles are a profound metaphor for resilience. They have withstood epidemics, disasters, wars, revolutions, confiscations, reconstructions, floods, and earthquakes. Castles are testaments to how their owners, across centuries, fulfilled their life missions while founding families, caring for the environment, and fostering well-being.
I was further inspired by St. Teresa of Ávila’s book, The Interior Castle, which gave new depth and color to the metaphor of human destiny and spiritual journey.
My mission is clear: through the revitalization of castles, I aim to infuse our lives with love and heal our souls through good deeds. Our historical, architectural, and cultural heritage thereby gains both symbolic significance and substantial (im)material value.
As Isaiah 58:12 says, “Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins; you will raise up the age-old foundations; and you will be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of the streets in which to dwell.”
